The summer is here and you want to host the ultimate outdoor party. The only problem is, you don’t know where to start. You’ve been to parties before that seems like they went off without a hitch. Now, you want to create that same experience for your loved ones and guests.
Every great summer party starts with planning. By planning up front you’ll ensure all of your guests show up, are fed, and have a great time. All while you can relax and enjoy the festivities as well.
Below we offer a checklist that will help you plan and throw the ultimate summer party.
Whether you’re sending physical or digital invites, or sending a text to everyone you’d like to show up, make sure you do it early. Most people have action packed summers, so trying to throw a party at the last minute can get a little difficult.
Include when the party is, what kind of food you’ll be serving, and any necessary attire (if you’re throwing a themed party). In some cases, the weather might interfere with your plans, so it’s helpful to specify whether or not the party will continue to due unforeseen rain.
The last thing you want is to run out of seats for your guests and have to force them to stand the entire time. Once you’ve received confirmation from your guests make sure you have enough seating options.
If you’ve maxed out with all of your current indoor and outdoor furniture, then you could always consider renting chairs. Renting folding chairs is actually a surprisingly cheap option. It’s always better to have additional seating you don’t use, as opposed to running out of chairs for your guests.
If you’re hosting your party out on your outdoor deck, then you’ll want to make sure you have ambient lighting. If you’re outside your eyes will eventually adjust to the dark, but having strings of lights is always a nice touch.
Strings of lights are relatively cheap and you can string them along your deck handrails, your fence, or even among tree branches.
You can even have professional lighting installed that will integrate with your deck and the surrounding landscape.
Music won’t be the main focus of your party, but having great background music is always a nice touch. You don’t want your music to be too loud, but instead to create a nice ambiance for your party.
If you’re unsure what kind of music your guests enjoy, then it’s always a safe bet to go heavy on the classics. You can always spice things up with some of your favorite music too. By creating a playlist beforehand you can ensure there are no lulls of silence during your party.
When planning food for your party it’s always a good idea to over prepare, rather than run out of food for your guests. If you have any guests with certain dietary restrictions, then make sure they’re catered to as well.
If you’re unsure about your guest’s dietary restrictions, you can always create multiple dishes for a wide variety of diets.
Or, if you want to outsource some of the cooking you can create a potluck, and have each of your guests bring a dish to contribute.
If you’re hosting your party in the middle of the afternoon, then make sure to provide plenty of shade for your guests. Include plenty of umbrellas, and you can even provide fans for your guests too.
If your friends are bringing their kids to your party you can always turn on a sprinkler to entertain them and provide a cool environment for your guests.
This is one thing that a lot of people overlook. Now, you don’t have to hire an exterminator before your first big party of the summer, but you should do what you can so your guests won’t come home covered in bug bites.
One of the most common culprits during the summer months is the dreaded mosquito. You can help to keep mosquitos at bay by removing any standing water around your property, having citronella candles on your outdoor tables, and even offer your guests complimentary bug wipes.
Planning a summer party might seem like a lot of work, but we hope with the steps above you’ll be able to create a flawless event for family and friends.
